While the moustache gave out its mightiest cry this millennia with the dawning of the worldwide Movember movement, its history reaches back much farther. The first known depiction is found in a portrait of an Iranian horseman from 300 BC. Since then, it’s been worn by some of the most famous politicians, philosophers, artists, scientists and dictators of all time.

Men across the globe have sported moustaches over the centuries and, historically, they were regarded as a symbol of power and prestige. Many styles of moustache are possible and past trends have included both wispy whisker and shaggy bush-like varieties.

Growing a moustache

Much depends on individual genetics, but most men can grow a decent moustache in a few weeks. Participating in Movember requires that men commence the month clean-shaven. As facial hair grows in, the usual method of shaving should be employed to all areas of the face except the upper lip. Scissors and a fine-toothed comb can be used to groom and shape the moustache. It’s best to avoid electric razors, as it’s easy to misstep with these devices. Whiskers should be regularly washed to keep them clean and moustache wax can be used to help achieve the desired shape.

Fundraise

Growing a moustache is good fun, but Movember is about more than just laughs. Fundraising for men’s health issues like prostate cancer, testicular cancer and men’s mental health is at the heart of the movement. Men can fundraise by creating their own personalized fundraising page on the Movember website. Through word-of-mouth and social media, they can get sponsored by family, friends and co-workers to grow their moustaches for a good cause. This Movember, become a “Mo Bro” or sponsor one in your community.
